While there's no way to know for sure, this would help explain why the developers stated "we are required to close HEX: Shards of Fate" rather than stating that circumstances were forcing them to do so. Five years later, the developer probably couldn't afford to renew the license. In all likelihood Hex had to license some aspect of MTG from Wizards due to Hex's similarity to MTG. ![]() While it will likely never be known exactly what the licensing agreement was, some inferences can be made. What the issue was is not specified, but it seemed both parties were satisfied. The statement declares that the two companies had reached a settlement over a licensing issue. ![]() The reason given was a simple link back to a statement on the legal dispute with Wizards of the Coast, which many had thought became irrelevant over the past few years. On October 1st, Hex released a statement announcing that it was shutting down at the end of the year. For around two years, players were stuck in limbo, with a frozen metagame and no new PVE adventures. The game simply was not making enough money, and new content eventually stopped coming altogether. Payouts became delayed for both the artists creating the game's gorgeous card art as well as tournament winners. Many players drifted away. A dwindling player count is bad news for a live service game, as Marvel's Avengers' recent numbers can attest. The game has a dedicated community, especially those who had backed it initially, but over time, new PVE content was less forthcoming and PVP remained basically inaccessible without substantial direct payment. It probably wouldn't have hurt for Hex to take a look at the failings of Diablo 3's auction houses. The auction house really needed to be mixed with another way to trade resources, because as the sole option available, it only made third party sites like HexPrimal look all the more inviting. Such a trading method might have worked fine in a straight MMO, but there simply wasn't enough MMO in Hex to warrant it. Essentially, the auction house made it a nightmare both to unload unwanted resources and obtain wanted ones. On top of that, just like how Magic: the Gathering deck lists can drive up the price of key, non-rare cards, the same happened in Hex's marketplace. When HexPrimal published a piece outlining a way to use the Ranger class to easily grind for gold, all the equipment and cards listed suddenly became expensive commodities. ![]() The problem ran the other way too, with very rare cards and pieces of equipment commanding very high prices, usually in platinum. In Hex, there was no way to unload unwanted cards or pieces of gear because no one would buy them, making them functionally useless. Here again Hex did not implement the crafting systems of games like Hearthstone, where players can melt down unwanted cards into material to make other cards. The only problem is it brought the worst aspects of both: the chase of a TCG and the grind of an MMO.Īdding to the problem of acquiring cards was Hex's auction house, which was the only way outside of a direct trade for players to acquire a specific card, resource, or indeed any specific thing they wanted. So, in a way, Hex lived up to its promise of an MMOTCG. This required grinding the PVE until it just wasn't fun anymore, and the transfer process was far from flawless. Without the in-game option, players' only choice was to use a third-party website called HexPrimal to trade gold for plat at a ridiculous rate. Compared to the numerous ways players can earn cards in something like MTG: Arena, and the level of restriction put on players in Hex becomes obvious.ĭespite innovating far beyond games like Hearthstone and Shadowverse in terms of gameplay and PVE content, Hex failed to emulate those games' most fundamental aspect: players should be rewarded for playing. Second, platinum was only paid out in meaningful amounts to players at the highest rank, and only at the end of a competitive season. One was that PVP was still gated off by requiring platinum to have any shot at building a competitive deck. While players could earn platinum by ranking high in PVP, there were two problems. RELATED: Hearthstone Developer Defends Rewards Overhaul After Fan Outcry ![]() This is where we retrieve straightforward or contextually relevant definitions of words or concepts. Generally speaking, the left hemisphere of our brains is where we process the dominant meanings of things. It may be a cliché to talk about the “left brain” and the “right brain,” but at the same time, it’s critical to our understanding of where creative ideas originate. Not only do flashes of genius have a unique electrical pattern in the brain, they also have their own discrete location. What they found was that when participants reported aha moments, activity showed up in the right hemisphere of their brains. To find out, Bowden and the team of researchers repeated the experiment while monitoring the subjects using an fMRI machine. ![]() We don’t even realize our brains are doing what they’re doing - which is why all this unseen work ultimately leads to what we think of as aha moments. So where exactly did the solution come from? Finding the Aha Have you ever looked at a crossword puzzle question and were unable to come up with a solution? Then, very suddenly, the answer hits you? Well, this feeling of being struck with a sudden solution is reflected by the activity in the gamma bands. This means aha moments exhibit their own unique brain wave pattern. ![]() The researchers believe that this burst in electrical activity signals when the solution enters a person’s consciousness. When participants solved problems via flashes of genius, there was a burst of gamma band activity 0.3 seconds before they came up with an answer. It’s one of the brain waves the scientists were most interested in studying. On the surface at least, there seemed to be a minimal difference between these two methods regardless of which one was experienced, the solutions showed up roughly ten seconds later.īut the EEG readings told a very different story.Įlectrical brain waves in the gamma band are thought to be activated when our brains engage in perception and language. Once they came up with an answer, they were then asked whether or not the solution came as an aha moment or as the result of logical analysis.įifty-six percent of the answers were attributed to an aha moment, 42 percent to logical analysis, while the remaining 2 percent checked neither box. When connected to the EEG machine, the participants wore goggles that revealed one of the word puzzles, and were given thirty seconds to solve it. Were they truly a magical experience, or was there perhaps a biological explanation for them?Īs part of their study, they tasked subjects to solve various of these word puzzles while connected to an EEG (electroencephalography) monitor, which can quickly detect the moments when electrical activity takes place in the brain, or an fMRI machine, which as a reminder, is the machine that can pinpoint where brain activity is taking place by measuring blood flow in the brain.īowden and his team hoped that by using these two machines they could see both when and where the brain was activated during aha moments. Bowden, along with a team from Northwestern University’s Creative Brain Lab and Drexel University, sought to understand the neuroscience behind aha moments. Since these kinds of puzzles can be solved using either approach, they give researchers insights into the science of aha moments.Įdward Bowden is a researcher at the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. With these solutions, the answer to the puzzle would come immediately upon seeing it or after a delay, but without conscious thought. Logical analysis is straightforward: You ponder whether a word “works” and think through the puzzle logically, step by step.Īha moments are the flashes of genius we’ve talked about throughout the book. These kinds of word puzzles tend to fascinate scientists because, depending on the person’s experiences, they can be solved either through logical analysis or via aha moments. If you came up with the solution, how’d you do it? Did it pop into your head instantly, or did you pore through various possible solutions? If you didn’t get it at all, what was your approach as you tried to figure it out? The answer is “ice” (ice cream, ice skate, ice water).
